(1896–1968), modernist Cuban painter. Born in Yaguajay, Cuba, on 5 January 1896, Amelia Peláez was the fifth of eleven children. Her father, Manuel Peláez, was a respected physician, and her mother, Maria del Carmen del Casal, was a schoolteacher, a pianist, and an amateur painter.
