Quick Reference

In myth, son of Tyro and Poseidon and father of Alcestis. Hesiod portrays him as an evil man; when king of Iolcus he devised the expedition for the Golden Fleece to rid himself of Jason 1's rightful claims to his throne. After the expedition Jason and Medea persuaded his daughters to cut him up so that Medea could rejuvenate him by boiling; thus did Hera punish him for neglecting to honour her. The funeral games in his honour were a famous subject for Archaic epic and vase‐painting.
