(1908–63), born in Kansas, after graduation from the state university and further study at Oxford, became a journalist and novelist. The History of Rome Hanks (1944) is a panoramic story of the Civil War. The History of Nora Beckham (1948), about small-town Kansas life at the end of the 19th century, involves some of the persons of the earlier novel. Darksome House (1959) collects poems.
