Quick Reference

(PNA)

A synthetic analogue of nucleic acid, in which the sugar-phosphate backbone is replaced by a peptide-like polyamide. PNAs will bind to complementary DNA or RNA and are resistant to both nucleases and peptidases. Extensively used as experimental tools, but early optimism about their potential therapeutic uses has diminished.
