Quick Reference

A measure of the effect of ageing on aerobic fitness. The percentage change in maximal aerobic power: (VO2max) = VO2max at age x years—VO2max at age x + y years/VO2max at x years × 100. Maximal aerobic power usually decreases by about 10% per decade with ageing, starting in the mid-20s for men and in the late teens for women. The decrease is associated with a decrease in cardiorespiratory efficiency (e.g. the stroke volume decreases with age). Endurance athletes who maintain high-intensity training as they age exhibit a smaller decrease in maximal aerobic power than those who stop training.
