British dance critic and writer. He was educated at Oxford University and was co-editor (with Clive Barnes) of the Oxford Ballet Club magazine Arabesque (1950). From 1950 he contributed to Dance and Dancers magazine; from 1981 he was its editor. He was dance critic of The Times in London from 1965 to 1994. One of Britain's most senior and influential dance critics, he was also author of Antony Tudor (Dance Perspectives, no. 17, 1963), Modern Ballet (1970, new edition, 1980), The World of Diaghilev (1971, new edition, 1979), Experimental Dance (1971), Nureyev: Aspects of the Dancer (1975, new edition, 1979), The Facts about a Ballet Company (1979), Theatre in My Blood, a biography of John Cranko (London, 1983), Men Dancing (with Alexander Bland, 1984), and The World of Nureyev (1996).
