Protein products of a single gene, found in the plasma membrane (L-periaxin, 1461 aa) and cytoplasm (S-periaxin, 147 aa) of Schwann cells and necessary for maintenance of peripheral nerve myelin. Both isoforms have PDZ domains. Mutations in the periaxin gene are responsible for some types of Dejerine–Sottas neuropathy. See also Charcot–Marie–Tooth disease.
