Inflammation around the area of a dental implant which may include loss of bony support. It is characterized by swelling and redness of the tissues possibly associated with bleeding and increased probing depth. The cause may be related to poor oral hygiene, the state of the tissue surrounding the implant, implant design, surface roughness, alignment of implant components, external morphology, or excessive mechanical load. Treatment is dependent on the cause.
