Technically, the period from the onset of labor to restoration to normal of the maternal uterus and adnexum after delivery of the infant. For statistical purposes, e.g., calculation of perinatal mortality rates, the perinatal period lasts from the 28th week of pregnancy until the end of the first week of life of the infant.
