An orbit that is closed so that the orbiting body follows the same trajectory repeatedly. An elliptical orbit is a periodic orbit. The orbit of planets about the Sun and the major satellites about their planets are almost periodic, although the mutual perturbations of the planets prevent the orbits from being exactly periodic.
