Inflammation of the paratenon, the tissue which surrounds and nourishes a tendon. Peritendinitis produces a crackling sensation over the area involved. It is a common overuse injury experienced by overenthusiastic exercisers. If not treated properly, the injury is potentially disabling. It is important for the damaged tissue to heal completely before training is resumed. If an injured person persists in training, there is a danger of the condition becoming chronic; permanent scarring of tissue may develop, increasing the thickness of the paratenon and reducing mobility, in which case surgery may be needed.
