Cells in which a particular virus may cause a productive infection (i.e., the production of progeny viruses). Cells in which infection is not productive are called nonpermissive cells. Some DNA tumor viruses may cause a productive infection in permissive cells of one species and a tumor in nonpermissive cells of another species.
