President of Argentina 1974–6 The third wife of Juan Perón, she met him when she was a nightclub dancer in Panama in 1955. After his 1973 election victory, Perón made her Vice‐President, so that upon his death in 1974 she became Latin America's first woman President. Unlike Evita Perón she was insecure and indecisive. In 1975 the economy went out of control and social unrest grew, so that a military coup became only a question of time. She resigned officially as head of the Perónist movement from her exile in Madrid in 1985.
