Islamic Union. Indonesian modernist organization founded in Bandung in 1923. Prior to World War II, the group opposed nationalism based on the belief that it divided Islam. In 1939 it joined the Supreme Islamic Council of Indonesia, which became a central coordinating body for Islamic affairs. Has a history of support for religious education, promotion of Islamic values, and concern with contemporary political and social questions.
