An emergency air-supply pack connected to the helmets of space shuttle astronauts while the vehicle is on the launch pad and during lift-off. It is intended for emergencies on the ground. Following the 1986 Challenger disaster, NASA recovered four PEAPs from the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean and found that three of them had been activated manually by the crew members.
