(PIA)
A UK self-regulating organization under the Securities and Investment Board, responsible for regulating the branches of the investment business dealing mainly with private investors. The PIA was formed in 1994 by merging the Financial Intermediaries, Managers and Brokers Regulatory Association and the Life Assurance and Unit Trust Regulatory Organization. The functions of the PIA were taken over by the Financial Services Authority in December 2001.
