Quick Reference

(PPE)

is equipment and clothing, which is designed to protect workers from risks to their health and safety. It includes safety helmets, gloves, eye protection, high-visibility clothing, safety footwear, and safety harnesses. In the security services and industry, it even includes body armour. All PPE should be provided by the employer and where possible the need for PPE should be eliminated by the redesign of work systems to eliminate hazards. This is so because the use of PPE often generates fresh hazards, such as restricted movement and dexterity arising from the wearing of heavy protective clothing and gloves.
