A combined measurement of persons and time in the denominator to calculate incidence, mortality, and other rates when individuals enter a study at varying intervals of time and their collective experience is being calculated. It is the sum of the periods of time that each individual in the study has been at risk. It is most often expressed as person-years. Related or similar expressions, such as person-dose, are sometimes used.
