Syn: whooping cough. A debilitating bacterial respiratory disease of children that is often prolonged, can be complicated by bronchopneumonia, and can cause emphysema. It can be fatal, especially in children younger than 1 year of age. It can be prevented by pertussis vaccine, which is most efficacious if commenced before infants are 6 months old.
