Quick Reference

The French term petits pois—literally ‘little peas’—seems first to have made its way into English in the early nineteenth century. In French it virtually means simply ‘pea’, since the French tend not to go in for the monster marrow-fats beloved of the British. In English, however, it denotes specifically ‘small young garden peas’—fresh, frozen, or tinned.
