author of A Petite Pallace of Pettie His Pleasure (1576), a collection of 12 ‘pretie Hystories’ concerning lovers, and all but one deriving from classical sources. Their style to some extent anticipates Lyly's euphuism. This work follows on from Painter's Palace of Pleasure from which Pettie derived his title, and his translation of most of Guazzo's Civile Conversation (1581) contributed to the Elizabethan vogue for courtesy literature and fiction.
