historian. A native of Side, in Pamphylia, he went to Constantinople, where he was an unsuccessful candidate for the patriarchate. His ‘Christian History’ was a hotch-potch of information on the period from the creation to ad 430; only fragments remain, including the assertion that Papias had stated that John the Apostle and his brother James had been martyred by the Jews.
