Quick Reference

An electronic component that varies in electrical conductivity with the amount of light falling on it. A voltage applied across the cell will therefore vary according to the light intensity. Devices using semiconducting materials such as cadmium sulphide or germanium are known as photodiodes and have enough sensitivity to be used for measuring the brightness of variable stars.
