Quick Reference

A technique used to establish the symmetry of a structure (such as a virus) observed in an electron micrograph. The micrograph is printed n times, the enlarging paper be ing rotated 360°/ n between successive exposures. Structures with n-fold radial symmetry show reinforcement of detail, whereas the micrograph will show no reinforcement when tested for n − 1 or n + 1 symmetry.
