A representation, usually in the form of a tree diagram, of the grammatical structure of a sentence (see illustration). The sentence is conventionally labelled S; a noun, N; a verb, V; a noun phrase, NP; a verb phrase, VP; a determiner, DET; and so on. See also constituent.
