At its simplest, a cursory inspection of heart rate (pulse) and respiratory function by listening to the breath sounds with a stethoscope. A thorough physical examination includes meticulous inspection, palpation, auscultation of the functions of respiratory, cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, neurological, genitourinary, hematological, musculoskeletal, and epidermal systems, reinforced with relevant laboratory and radiological investigations.
