These chemicals are used as plasticizers in polyvinyl chloride products, including building materials, blood bags, and children's toys, and as additives in consumer products such as cosmetics, personal care products, wood finishes, and insecticides. Some are used as herbicides for ground crops such as strawberries. They are cutaneous irritants and intense gastrointestinal irritants, and also can cause asthma-like symptoms. In experimental animals their toxic effects include testicular atrophy and malignant neoplasms after prolonged exposure.
