The process of cleaning metal surfaces by acid immersion. It is used to improve the bonding of porcelain to the metal surface by removing unwanted oxides on the metal surface. Pickling agents include phosphoric, nitric, hydrochloric, hydrofluoric, and sulphamic acids (sulfamic acid; trade name Neacid®). Commonly used acids for pickling gold alloys are 50% hydrofluoric acid and 30% hydrochloric acid.
