He began printing and distributing tracts, then took over Glasgow's Bible and Book Depot (1886), in partnership first with William Inglis and then John and Cecil Gray. The firm consolidated its success by expanding to London (1919). His most important enterprises were the evangelical journal The Witness, the anecdotal Acts and Facts, and biographical sketches, Chief Men among the Brethren (1918 and 1931).
