novelist, born in Australia and brought up in Mexico and the UK. Pierre, whose real name is Peter Finlay, devised his pseudonym (the D. B. C. stands for ‘Dirty But Clean’) for the publication of his first novel, Vernon God Little (2003). Set in Martirio (barbecue sauce capital of Texas), this is the story of local teenager Vernon Little, suspected of involvement in a brutal school shooting; with its bold and energetic first‐person voice and lively plotting, this debut novel earned Pierre the Booker Prize. His second novel, Ludmila's Broken English, followed in 2006.
