A secretion from the lining of the crop of both male and female pigeons and doves (Columbidae) that the birds regurgitate to feed their young. Prolactin stimulates milk production and the milk has the appearance of cottage cheese. It consists of: 13–19% protein; 7–13% fat; 1–2% minerals and vitamins; and 65–81% water.
