Quick Reference

Deep social cleavages (e.g. between Catholics and Protestants) are recognized and legitimized by providing institutional autonomy to organized social groups in areas such as education and broadcasting. The Netherlands provides the most developed example of pillarization, the word being coined there, with official recognition provided to religious, secular, and territorial pillars (Zuilen).
