(ca. 1722–ca. 1793), letter writer and agricultural pioneer. Eliza Lucas was born in Antigua, West Indies, and educated in England; she eventually settled near Charleston, South Carolina, where at twenty-two she married Charles Pinckney, a widowed lawyer more than twenty years her senior. Eliza was subsequently widowed at age thirty-five.
