New Jersey-born poet, after graduation from Rutgers and a Ph.D. from Stanford became a professor of English at Wellesley and the University of California, Berkeley (1980–). His collections include Sadness and Happiness (1975), An Explanation of America (1979), and History of My Heart (1984). Critical works include Landor's Poetry (1968) and The Situation of Poetry (1977).
