Austrian‐born composer and musicologist (Amer. cit. 1941). Worked as mus. critic in Vienna 1921–34. Settled in USA 1936, becoming prof. of mus. Redlands Univ., Calif., head of mus. dept. 1948–50; prof. of mus., Univ. of Texas, Austin, 1951–63, Washington Univ., St Louis 1963–72. Wrote Life and Works of Schütz (1972). Works incl. 3 Ceremonial Rites for orch., str. qt., cantata Die neue Stadt, etc.
