Quick Reference

A safe and simple method to dispose of human excreta, a pit privy is an excavated pit about 2 meters deep beneath a toilet seat, with the whole enclosed in a small shed for privacy and to exclude flies. Lime or ashes may be sprinkled on the contents from time to time to reduce the odor, but disinfectant is not used because it could interfere with the natural biological processes that digest the contents and can make a well-designed pit privy virtually everlasting.
