Pope from 1559. Probably his greatest achievement was the reassembling and successful conclusion of the Council of Trent (1562–3), whose decrees he began to execute. He published a new Index in 1564, prepared the ‘Roman Catechism’, imposed the ‘Professio Fidei Tridentina’ on all holders of ecclesiastical office, and reformed the Sacred College.
