Muscles in the posterior and lateral compartments of the lower leg which effect plantar flexion. The major plantar flexors are the gastrocnemius and soleus. They may be assisted by the tibialis posterior, flexor digitorum longus, flexor hallucis longus, peroneus longus, and peroneus brevis.
