Quick Reference

A spacecraft instrument used to measure plasmas in interplanetary space and within planetary magnetospheres. Plasmas are a hot state of matter made up of positive ions and electrons. Detectors measure the composition, temperature, density, velocity, and distribution of plasmas. The instruments also collect information on the solar wind and its interaction with planetary systems. A plasma detector was carried on board the Cassini space probe.
