Particles of 70–170 nm diameter that are derived from platelets, although probably not platelet membranes, being deficient in carbohydrates. They are reportedly 40% protein, 42% phospholipids, 13% cholesterol, and 5% triacylglycerols and may function as a surface for attachment of other coagulation factors leading to activation of prothrombin, rather than having a catalytic role.
