A silvery-white, soft metallic element. It is mixed with gold, silver, copper, or zinc to produce alloys suitable for inlays, crowns, or bridges. It adds strength, stiffness, and durability to alloys. A thin layer of platinum foil is used as a matrix in the construction of the core of a porcelain crown to provide rigidity during fabrication and firing and allow separation of the porcelain from the die.
