Quick Reference

An outdoor area on the school premises where pupils play, under supervision, at break times and during the lunchtime break. The area may also be used during lesson times for organized games, physical education, and other activities such as measuring, drawing, or nature observation. Unlike the playing field, it will usually have a hard surface so as to be usable in all weathers. During outdoor break times the supervision of pupils by teaching staff is known as playground duty, and is usually organized on a rota system. In primary schools these breaks are commonly known as playtime.
