A grassed area which is usually, but not always, adjoining the school, and is used for activities such as organized games and competitive sports. The number of schools with extensive playing fields has fallen for two reasons: successful and popular schools wishing to expand their teaching accommodation may use playing field land for this purpose, while those in need of additional finance may apply through their local authority to sell some or part of their playing fields to raise funds. Such applications for approval are made to the Department for Children, Schools, and Families. This trend has, however, recently reversed, and some schools are seeking additional space for use as playing fields. See also playground.
