Although the roots of this German company lay in the 19th century when it was established by Andreas Brandstätter, it only moved into plastic products in 1954. Included in its range were toys and leisure products such as hula‐hoops (1958). In 1974 the company's head of development, Hans Beck, introduced the Playmobil range of figures of various occupations whose arms and legs could be moved, accessories added. They have proved incredibly popular and well over 1.5 million sets have been sold since their introduction.
