A genus of filamentous cyanobacteria (section III) which can carry out nitrogen fixation. They are often difficult to distinguish from Lyngbya and Phormidium (the LPP group). They are found in aquatic environments and on soil. Species growing on soil help to bind together soil particles and prevent erosion.
