Quick Reference

An abnormal space developing between the gingiva and the root of a tooth. The pocket depth is measured, usually in millimetres, from the gingival crest to the base of the pocket. A false (pseudo- or gingival pocket) is created when there is gingival enlargement due to inflammation, without an apical proliferation of the junctional epithelial attachment. Pocket marking accurately determines the pocket depth either as an aid to diagnosis or to provide a guideline for a gingivectomy incision. See also periodontal pocket.
