Quick Reference

A visual method of estimating the magnitude of variable stars, based on training the eye to recognize the difference between the variable and a comparison star in steps of 0.1 magnitude. Consistent estimates by this method are generally possible only after considerable experience. The comparison star should not be more than 0.5 magnitude different in brightness from the variable. See also argelander step method; fractional method.
