Quick Reference

A concept that was invoked by Wegener to explain his ideas about continental drift. He suggested that a differential gravitational force (the Eötvös force), caused by the flattening of the Earth at the poles, would cause continental masses to drift towards the equator. This force is now known to be far too weak to cause continental movements.
