Quick Reference

Clouds that occur just below the mesopause at c.85–88 km, most probably as polar caps that extend equatorward to latitudes of about 70° N and S. They appear to be closely related to noctilucent clouds, but separated from the latter by a clear break of some 5–10° of latitude. They are visible at ultraviolet wavelengths from polar-orbiting satellites and have also been detected in visible-light images obtained by Meteosat around local midnight.
