The decisive victory of Peter I (the Great) of Russia over Charles XII of Sweden in the Northern War. Aided by the support of the Cossack hetman (leader) Mazeppa (1644–1709) together with 5000 of his men, the Russians succeeded in defeating the Swedes at Poltava, near Kiev.
